You will
probably notice that markers are missing from the coloring kits.
This is because I have a strong belief that markers are overused
and tend to overshadow other drawing utensils. I find that
children given the choice to use markers tend to choose markers over
all other drawing utensils, such as crayons,
pencils, chalk, pastels, etc...which means they don't get the
feel for all the different types of drawing utensils out there.
With things such as crayons and pencils, children can practice
shading and drawing darker/lighter, they can draw using the tip
or the side of them, and they can experience the different feel
and look of the different utensils. But when markers are an option,
children tend to ignore all other tools. I think that it's
important for children to experience a diversity of drawing
utensils so I like to keep markers out of little hands as long
as possible. That said, for those that still would like these
oh-so-popular drawing utensils (markers), I may offer some
interesting options for this in the future. But never in the
toddler kits, only older kids' kits. I don't believe children
should be exposed to markers until they've had time to explore
crayons and pencils and other drawing utensils. |
